“Grossman wrote snowy egret, January messenger when living in Japan and was inspired by Honkyoku, the classical Japanese music for solo shakuhachi (bamboo flute) played by wandering samurai monks and originally passed on in an oral tradition. Playing this piece is an invitation to immerse, "to walk" and "pass on to others" within this tradition, and Oliveira's performance evokes such a passage; her interpretation and sound is rich in color and nuance, inspiring one to learn the piece and more about the shakuhachi. In contrast, Oliveira's performance of Island of the Spirit effortlessly delivers the wild melodic leaps, intense dynamic range, and emotional swings the composer intends.” - BJ Nicoletti, The Flutist Quarterly vol. 48 no. 1
